PPE Basics: What to Wear and When It Matters
PPE only works if it’s worn at the right time — and worn the right way. This isn’t about overthinking it. It’s about knowing what protects you in real jobsite conditions.
Here’s the simple breakdown.
Hard Hats — Use When:
Anytime there’s overhead work, moving equipment, material handling, or a chance something could fall, swing, or shift. Even a small drop can cause a serious injury. If you’re on an active jobsite, the hard hat stays on. No exceptions for “just a minute.”
Safety Glasses — Use When:
Cutting, grinding, drilling, hammering, or working around dust, debris, or flying particles. Eyes don’t heal like hands do — once they’re damaged, it’s permanent. Glasses should be on before the work starts, not after something goes wrong.
Gloves — Use When:
Handling materials, tools, sharp edges, rough surfaces, or anything that could pinch, cut, burn, or scrape. Gloves protect against injuries that don’t seem serious at first but can take you out of work fast.
High-Visibility Vests — Use When:
Working around traffic, equipment, or anywhere visibility is limited. If equipment is moving, operators need to see you clearly — every time, from every angle.
Steel-Toe or Protective Footwear — Use When:
Always. Uneven ground, heavy materials, dropped tools, and rolling equipment don’t give warnings. Proper footwear protects your feet and helps with balance and stability all day long.
Hearing Protection — Use When:
Anytime noise levels make it hard to talk without raising your voice. Long-term hearing damage doesn’t happen all at once — it builds over time, and it doesn’t reverse.
PPE isn’t about slowing the job down. It’s about making sure everyone can work safely, confidently, and consistently.
Wear it before you need it.
That’s how PPE does its job.
